How to Set an Awesome New Year’s Fitness Goal

Fitness

Fitness and health goals are among the most popular set at the beginning of each new year. Your health is a critical part of your life, setting the foundation for everything else you do. Making goals to improve your health or fitness can be incredibly beneficial – but they’re also difficult. Setting the right kind of fitness goal is critical to your success and your overall health. So before you set yet another abstract fitness goal, we’ve got some helpful tips for you.

How to Set an Awesome New Year’s Fitness Goal

Evaluate First

Where are you in your fitness journey right now? Can you touch your toes? Is your BMI classified as “obese?” Take some time to identify your current fitness level, and consider seeing your doctor for a wellness check.

What Do You Really Want?

Very few people actually want to lose weight. What they want is to fit in their old jeans, to look great in a swimsuit this summer or to be able to keep up with their kids. Identify what you actually want from your health and fitness. Maybe you want to have more fun with your workouts or run a marathon. Maybe you just want to address some health issues. Determine what you ACTUALLY want as the more specific your goals, the easier it is to track your progress.

Think Outside the Box

You can get a great workout at home, at the park, at a karate studio or at the gym. Think about mixing up what you’ve been doing – could you join a team? Get a trainer? Try a new fitness class? Team up with a friend? It’s easy to get bored with your fitness regimen so switching things up can help keep you motivated.

Find What Motivates You

Some people need external accountability – like a trainer or a workout buddy. Some people need competition – like a race of beating a personal best. Some people want tangible rewards – like a vacation or a new pair of shoes. Some people want to share their progress and get public validation from others. No type of motivation is better than another! You just need to find something that works for you.

Start Small

Break down your goal into as many steps as you can and spread it across weeks and months. Then pick the smallest step and begin right now. It might be reading an article about the benefits of weight training or following a clean eating Instagram account. Start small and start now.

Fitness goals are well worth your effort. It’s all about finding the right goal for you, identifying ways to achieve that goal and incorporating those small steps into your daily routine. Remember, anything that might get you results overnight is likely not sustainable. If you’re looking for long-term success, the slow and steady approach is the way to go.
